Long-term residence (dlhodobý pobyt) and Slovak citizenship — strategy and filing
After five years of continuous temporary residence you can apply for long-term residence (dlhodobý pobyt) — since 15 July 2025 this requires a Slovak language exam at A2 or higher — and after a further eight years for citizenship. Does time on dočasné útočisko count towards long-term residence?
As a rule, time on temporary protection does not count towards the five years required for long-term residence — which is why switching to a regular residence permit in good time matters. We will look at your situation during the consultation.
What level of Slovak is needed for citizenship?
Everyday spoken and written communication is tested, along with basic knowledge about Slovakia. For long-term residence itself, a certificate at A2 or higher has been required since 15 July 2025. We will tell you how to prepare.
